Patios provide a great appearance and are also virtually maintenance free. They also have advantages over other popular alternatives. Wooden decking needs to be replaced every 8 years or so, depending on weather conditions, moisture and other factors that could cause the wood to rot.
Types of Patio
Patio Stones
Patio stones are often referred to as flags or slabs; these are concrete blocks more commonly of square or a rectangular shape. Many home owners choose this type of patio stone as it is the cheapest compared to alternative stones.
Flagstones
Flagstones are a natural material which is normally cut into shapes and produced from bluestone, limestone and sandstone. Natural flagstone patios are highly attractive when installed correctly.
Marble Pavers
Marble pavers are made from natural marble and cut into tiles for outdoor flooring designs. Marble pavers and tiles may be tumbled, such as travertine, to give the stone a buffed finish. Polished marble pavers and tiles are also available as a patio flooring option.
Granite Pavers
Like marble, granite is a natural stone that may be cut into tiles or pavers for a patio floor. Tumbled granite pavers have a more matt type than their polished counterparts.
Porcelain Slabs
Porcelain paving is formed by baking a mixture of clay, sand and other minerals in a high-temperature kiln producing an incredibly durable and non-porous material. Being resistant to water absorption ensures that porcelain paving requires very little maintenance. There’s no need to apply a sealant as the pavers are already stain and mildew resistant. Liquids such as oils and chemicals cannot penetrate the surface so can simply be wiped away and any fungus growth is mitigated.
